El Choco is a unique Psilocybe cubensis strain isolated by cultivator Dave Wombat in 2020 from the TAT Syndicate Facebook group. It originated as a random mutation of the common B+ variety, exhibiting unusually dark pigmentation and a “hairy” cap texture. Intrigued by these traits, Wombat isolated and stabilized this mutation, leading to the development of the El Choco strain.
The caps of El Choco mushrooms are dark chocolate-colored, with a dense, wood-like texture. The stems are thick and often grip the substrate at their base, sometimes making harvesting challenging. The growth pattern is distinctive, with fruits tending to form beneath the substrate surface and bursting forth almost fully grown. Over successive generations, El Choco has become progressively slower growing and more dense, contributing to its unique appearance and characteristics.
Microscopically, El Choco spores are subellipsoid and have 4-spored basidia. Pleurocystidia and cheilocystidia are present, providing excellent detail for taxonomy studies.
