What Species of Magic Mushrooms Grows in the United States?

Asking where do mushroom spores come from that contain psilocybin? There are over 180 species of magic mushrooms all over the world. These mushrooms are rich in compounds such as psilocybin, psilocin and baeocystin. The main criterion for differentiating among different types of mushrooms is the level of psilocybin they contain.

In Canada and the USA, there are about 22 species. Cubensis is the most commonly-spread type of magic mushrooms. It is also known as the “golden cap” due to the brown, golden cap they have. This cap starts out with a conical shape and turns flatter as it grows.

Psilocybe Mexicana is another species which can be found in Central America. A healthy mushroom has a brown cap, whereas an injured one typically turns blue.

Psilocybe Azurescens is also known as the “flying saucer” type of mushroom, due to the shape of their cap. Also known as the “wavy cap”, Psilocybe Cynescens is a very potent type of mushroom.

Psilocybe pelliculosa can be found on the Pacific Northwest parts of the US. Another species which can only be found in the northern part of Georgia, USA, is the one called “Psilocybe Weilli”. Its special smell and taste are very similar to cucumber, and these are among the most distinctive features of this mushroom.
