PES Hawaiian Mushroom Spores

The PES Hawaiian strain holds a legendary place in the world of mycology. Despite its name, Psilocybe cubensis does not naturally occur in the Hawaiian Islands — the strain was originally marketed by the Pacific Exotica Spora company, which gave it its “Hawaiian” designation. Since its introduction, it has become one of the most visually recognizable and widely studied cubensis varieties.

Under the microscope, PES Hawaiian spores display classic cubensis features, offering researchers excellent opportunities to observe spore size, shape, and pigmentation. The strain’s mature mushrooms are known for their thick, dense stems, broad golden-tan caps, and characteristic darker center spot. The caps often develop light surface flakes, a signature trait of the cubensis species that becomes more pronounced with age.

Because of its robust genetics and resilience to contamination, PES Hawaiian is considered one of the easiest strains to work with — perfect for newcomers studying spore morphology and microscopy preparation techniques.

Strain Origin

Originally distributed by the Pacific Exotica Spora company of Hawaii, this strain does not occur naturally on the islands. It was introduced to the microscopy community through the efforts of early mycological researchers and commercial collectors in the 1980s.
