Leucistic organisms have abnormally low pigmentation, which is seen as an overall pale tint or regions of diminished color. A genetic defect prevents melanin and other colors from being deposited into the mycelium, resulting in leucistic mushrooms. Unfortunately, there is almost no information on the history of this strain, who cultivated it first, or what country it was discovered in.

Psilocybe cubensis is a hallucinogenic mushroom species that contains the active chemicals psilocybin and psilocin. It was formerly known as Stropharia cubensis and belongs to the Hymenogastraceae fungus family. Due to its widespread distribution and ease of culture, it is the most well-known psilocybin mushroom.

In Cuba, American mycologist Franklin Sumner Earle initially described the species as “Stropharia cubensis” in 1906. French pharmacist and mycologist Narcisse Théophile Patouillard described it as “Naematoloma caerulescens” in Tonkin (now northern Vietnam) in 1907. In 1949, Rolf Singer, a German-born mycologist, placed the species in the genus Psilocybe and gave it the scientific name “Psilocybe cubensis.” Psilocybe subcubensis, a closely related species found in tropical areas, is similar but contains smaller spores. Psilocybe cubensis is a pan-tropical species that may be found in Gulf Coast states, the southeastern United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, and a variety of other places.
